Graduate students from Miami University's Project Dragonfly engage with conservation leaders to make a difference

Graduate students from Miami University's Project Dragonfly engage with conservationists from around the world in action projects on vital human and ecological issues through a new online course titled "Earth Expeditions: Connected Conservation (EECC)." Miami's Dragonfly team developed the course in response to the global health crisis and as an alternative to Dragonfly's summer Earth Expeditions travel field courses.

Miami University Regionals Students Win Honors In Perk-Up Middletown Art Project

Artwork created by students from Miami University Regionals has been selected to be displayed on electrical boxes throughout Middletown as part of the Perk-Up Middletown project. The public art project, which is sponsored by the City of Middletown, the Rotary Club of Middletown, the Middletown Arts Center and Miami University Regionals Middletown Campus, is intended to create pride in the visual aesthetics of the downtown area while showing that Middletown is a vibrant and exciting destination for visitors and residents alike.

Miami University RedHawk Landon Stephens Signs With Atlanta Braves

Senior Miami University baseball utility player Landon Stephens signed a free agent deal with the Atlanta Braves on Sunday and will begin his professional career. Stephens has been one of the RedHawks' most prolific hitters the past four seasons as he finishes his collegiate career with a .301 batting average. He ranks third all-time in Miami history with 53 career doubles, tied for 10th with 11 triples and tied for 10th with 136 RBIs. His best season came in 2019, when he was named First-Team All-Mid-American Conference after hitting .310 with nine home runs and a team-leading 46 RBIs.

Twenty-four Mid-American Conference (MAC) student-athletes were named as Medal of Excellence Award winners for the 2019-20 academic season, with Miami University's Margaret Payne honored. The Medal of Excellence is an award presented annually to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each of the 12 Conference member institutions.

Miami University Bateman Team receives National Honor in Case Study Competition

The Miami University Bateman team has received an Honorable Mention in the Public Relations Student Society of America's (PRSSA) national case study competition. The 5-member team consisted of strategic communication majors LeeAnn Burczynski, Marisa Sulek, Graham Leu, Sarah Myers, and Ava Dasari, who all worked for most of this school year to research, plan, implement, and evaluate a strategic public relations plan to submit to the competition. Visiting instructor in the Department of Media, Journalism and Film Shara Clark, APR was the team's adviser.

Miami University Student Awarded Prestigious Astronaut Scholarship

Miami University student, Alexandra "Lexie" Adams, has been awarded a scholarship from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF). She is one of 56 students from 41 universities to receive the award for the 2020-2021 academic year. The Astronaut Scholarship is among the most significant merit-based monetary scholarships awarded to undergraduate STEM juniors and seniors who intend to pursue research or advance their field upon completion of their final degree. Astronaut Scholars are among the best and brightest minds in STEM who show initiative, creativity and excellence in their chosen field, according to the ASF.

In Miami University's Introduction to Disability Studies (DST 272) course, students are required to develop an action project to improve accessibility, and some students were able to help in a way they couldn't have imagined. The students are making and donating accessible masks to help during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Miami University Graduate Students Win Three-Minute Thesis Competition

More than 50 graduate students participated in Miami University Graduate School's Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition earlier this semester in the traditional face-to-face format. The 10 finalists competed April 28 in the final round, which, like most other events during these Stay-Safe-Ohio days, was held remotely. Rose Marie Ward, interim associate provost and dean of the Graduate School, said "I am so proud of the students. Our 10 finalists had to adapt to the new remote environment and be able to present a complex topic without any audience participation." The 3MT is a research communication competition for graduate students, held at universities worldwide. It challenges participants to present their research in just 180 seconds, in an engaging form that can be understood by an intelligent audience with no background in the research area.

Miami University Students Hit New Record With 10 Fulbright Grant Offers

Ten of Miami University's Fulbright semifinalists have been offered 2020-2021 grants.These are the most offers Miami has ever received in a single year. Fulbright, the largest U.S. exchange program, provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English teaching assistant programs outside of the United States. Since 2000, 59 Miami students and alumni - not including these latest offers - have received Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants to conduct research or teach overseas, according to Karla Guinigundo, director of global partnerships in Miami's Office of Global Initiatives. "The growth in Fulbright success at Miami is a testament to the value placed on cultural exchange by both the students who apply and the many faculty and staff who support the applicants each year," Guinigundo said. "It is exciting to see so many of our students making a global impact through this program."

Miami University Students Win Grand Prize at Solar Decathlon

Students from the architecture + interior design and mechanical engineering departments at Miami University collaborated in the 2020 Solar Decathlon on April 18-19, 2020. The teams planned to travel to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, to present their projects last week. The trip was canceled, but they were able to present their final proposals in a virtual event where they won the top award for Attached Housing and was awarded Grand Jury Winner in the residential division.

Miami RedHawk Defensive Tackle Signs As Free Agent with Jacksonville Jaguars

Doug Costin, a three-year starter for the Miami University football team, has agreed to a free agent deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League. Costin earned first team All-MAC honors in 2019 after registering 58 tackles, 12.0 tackles for loss and four sacks. He had seven tackles and two tackles for loss at Ohio and was named the team's Defensive MVP, helping the RedHawks to their first MAC Championship since 2010. In his career, Costin played in 50 games, recording 178 tackles, 16.5 sacks, 32.5 tackles for loss, 12 pass breakups and three forced fumbles.

Miami RedHawk Kicker Selected in NFL Draft by Los Angeles Rams

Sam Sloman, a member of the Miami University football team, was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Sloman was the 248th overall selection. Sloman finished his Miami career ranked second in made field goals (49), third in attempts (62), third in field goal percentage (.790), second in extra points made (112) and fourth in school history in total points (259). This past season, the Roswell, Georgia, native connected on 26 of 30 field goals, both the most in a single season in Miami history. For his efforts he earned Second-Team All-MAC and Second-Team All-America by The Athletic. He was also named the team's MVP. Sloman shined in the biggest moments all season long. He was a perfect 4-for-4 in the MAC Championship Game, earning the game's Special Teams Player of the Game honor. He also showed a strong leg, connecting on 4-of-5 field goals of over 50 yards, including a 53-yard game-winning field goal at Ohio with under four minutes to play.

Miami Students Earn Goldwater Scholarship

Miami University juniors Alexandra (Lexie) Adams and Hope Kirby have each received a Goldwater Scholarship for 2020-2021. They are among 396 students nationwide to receive the scholarship, the premier undergraduate award of its type in the fields of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering. Adams is a chemical engineering major and Spanish minor from Liberty Township. Kirby is a microbiology major and geology and bioinformatics double minor from Glendale, Arizona. They are two of 13 students from an Ohio public university to receive the award. The Goldwater Foundation Scholarship Program encourages outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering, Nationwide, faculty nominated 1,343 students - from a pool of more than 5,000 - for the scholarship, worth up to $7,500 per year.

Miami Students Named Best and Brightest Business Majors of 2020

Two Farmer School students have been named to Poets and Quants for Undergrad's list of Best and Brightest Business Majors of 2020. Finance major J'Quaan Waite and marketing major Laura Mena are among the 100 students selected nationwide. P&Q described the selected students as "seniors who differentiated themselves through their academic excellence, extracurricular leadership, innate potential, and personal character these forces of nature are always there for others, to lend help and lead by example. In the end, they are the students who'll be remembered, the ones who left their schools better than they found them."

On this episode of the Major Insight podcast, Madison speaks about her fieldwork and her service-learning with non-profit organizations such as Our Daily Bread in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Big Brothers, Big Sisters. And about how her involvement in Miami youth-based programs such as Dream Keepers, has given her the experience and the perspective needed to make ours schools and our local communities more accessible, inclusive, and prosperous for everyone.
