Miami University Student Awarded Prestigious Astronaut Scholarship
Miami University senior Hope Kirby, a microbiology major from Glendale Arizona, has been awarded a scholarship from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF). She is one of 60 students from 44 universities to receive the award for the 2021-2022 academic year. The Astronaut Scholarship is among the most significant merit-based monetary scholarships awarded to undergraduate STEM juniors and seniors who intend to pursue research or advance their field upon completion of their final degree.

Miami Student Earn Goldwater Scholarship
Miami University junior Ethan Klein has been named a Goldwater Scholar for 2021-2022. He is among 410 students nationwide to receive the scholarship, the premiere undergraduate award of its type in the fields of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering. Klein, from Stevenson Ranch, California, is one of seven students from an Ohio public university to receive the award. He is a geology major with an environmental science co-major, pursuing a certificate in geographic information science.

Each year, Miami University honors senior students whose service to Miami and our surrounding community embodies Love + Honor with the President's Distinguished Service Award. Their service through campus life, community service, intellectual and cultural leadership or student employment demonstrates the spirit of being a citizen leader of uncommon quality. Miami University has admitted a new cohort of students to its Master of Arts in biology and Master of Arts in Teaching in the biological sciences degrees. After a career-ending injury derailed her plans to play college soccer, Miami student Grace Chaney used the experience as an opportunity to find her true passions in biomechanics, orthopedics, and medicine. As a kinesiology and premed double major, Grace has served as an undergraduate fellow at the Mayo Clinic, and her award-winning research has already helped busy people find new ways to squeeze in effective workouts. Janelle Ghanem '21 has become extraordinarily adept at balancing two very different worlds. As a member of the Miami Women's tennis team, Janelle was named an All-Academic Scholar-Athlete, while also studying computer science and engineering. She has already gained experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning at the U.S. Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and as a Software Engineer at JPMorgan Chase. A pair of Farmer School students, Maddie Krueger and Grant Stierwalt, are this year's Miami University representatives in the Poets & Quants for Undergrads' 100 Best and Brightest Business School Students for 2021. Miami University Students Named Gilman Scholars
Six Miami University students have been awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships to help fund their study abroad experiences this spring and summer. The combined total awarded to these students is $28,500. Recipients of the Gilman Scholarship represent 307 colleges and universities across the United States who will study or intern in 87 countries through the end of 2021. Fewer than 1000 scholarships were awarded nationwide.

Miami University Regionals Students Win Honors In Perk-Up Middletown Art Project
Artwork created by students from Miami University Regionals has been selected to be displayed on electrical boxes throughout Middletown as part of the Perk-Up Middletown project. The public art project, which is sponsored by the City of Middletown, the Rotary Club of Middletown, the Middletown Arts Center and Miami University Regionals Middletown Campus, is intended to create pride in the visual aesthetics of the downtown area while showing that Middletown is a vibrant and exciting destination for visitors and residents alike.

Miami University Student Places in Light Fixture Design Competition
Interior Design student Alli Brooks has won 2nd place in the 2020 Robert Bruce Thompson Annual Student Light Fixture Design Competition. The $2,500 Award of Distinction was made to Alli Brooks for her custom-designed light fixture, "Nocturnal." Intended for application to the roofs of bus shelters and other outdoor public environments, the product combines a skylight with a light-emitting diode (LED) light source to form an integrated natural and artificial light source.

Miami University Film Studies Students Create Documentary
Miami University Film Studies students turn their quarantine experiences into a documentary. On March 10, students were informed that all spring classes would be taught remotely in response to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the United States. Each collaborator began working on personal portraits of either family members or themselves that demonstrated what family life in quarantine is like. These sequences were later combined to create the final 42-minute film.
