Miami University holds Undergraduate Awards Ceremony

Miami's physics department held its annual Spring Awards Ceremony Wednesday, April 27. Award presentations included over $44 thousand in scholarship announcements, department awards and recognition for outstanding research and teaching. Two new scholarships were awarded for the first time and another new scholarship was announced by Miami Physics alumnus, Russell Starkey, who set up the scholarship for incoming Physics majors.

Miami's microbiology department presented awards and scholarships to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students Wednesday, April 27, during the Orton K. Stark Lecture given by B. Brett Finlay, Peter Wall Distinguished Professor of Microbiology at the University of British Columbia.

Miami's political science department held its annual recognition ceremony for outstanding juniors and seniors Thursday, April 14, in the lobby of Harrison Hall. Participating in the ceremony was Darrell West (Miami '76), a former award recipient, currently vice president and director of governance studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington. After the presentation of awards, West gave a talk on "Obama, the Republicans, and the Tea Party." Students from Miami University, recently attended the Inter-University Council of Ohio (IUC) Higher Education Day at the Statehouse. The event included office visits, conversations with elected officials, and a luncheon with the general assembly members in the Statehouse Atrium.

Eight students from Miami University will participate in "Finding Work, Finding Our Way: Building the Economy and Jobs of the Future," a digital town hall meeting originating at the Newseum in Washington D.C., and presented by The Atlantic Wednesday, Feb. 9. Miami is one of just two universities invited to participate in the meeting. The live webcast will air 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and can be seen online at www.jobsandeconomy.com. At this interactive site, visitors can submit questions and comments. Among speakers during the event are Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner, Director of the National Economic Council Gene Sperling and FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski.
