At its spring commencement ceremony earlier this month, Miami University welcomed recent graduates from the Global Field Program as some of its newest alumni. The Global Field Program (GFP) from Miami University's Project Dragonfly brings together master's degree candidates, scientists, educators and community leaders at critical conservation field sites across the globe for firsthand experience with inquiry-driven education, environmental stewardship and global understanding. Miami University's forensics team won the national championship for the third year at the 31st. annual Novice National Tournament, reserved for first year competitors. Twenty-four Miami students bested 17 other schools, including the University of Alabama, the University of Florida and Louisiana State University. Local students top results are:

Miami University awarded 934 degrees to students during fall commencement exercises Friday, Dec. 14, 2011, in Millett Hall. The Miami University forensics team finished first overall at the competition held in February at Marietta College. Miami was crowned champion of the debate division as well as the individual events division, claiming 34 of the 78 awards offered at the tournament. Additionally, the team had members advance to the finals of every event offered. The team won first place in dramatic interpretation, prose interpretation, extemporaneous speaking, Lincoln-Douglas debate and parliamentary debate.

Seven Miami University students received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad. The students have been awarded a collective total of $29,000. The scholarship program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad by supporting U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding; the program also aims to diversify the countries and regions where students go to study.

OXFORD, Ohio - Ohio Gov. John Kasich has appointed Arianne Wilt as the student trustee on the Miami University board of trustees.

Miami University's department of comparative religion presented awards to three students for their work during the 2011-2012 academic year.

Operating in over 155 countries, the Fulbright Program is the U.S. government's premiere scholarship program, and is awarded to students or scholars with strong academic background, leadership potential and a passion for increasing understanding among different cultures and nations. Approximately 1,600 U.S. students receive the award each year.

Students were nominated by student affairs staff as well as faculty on each of the Miami University campuses. Students were recognized for their outstanding contributions in the way of their commitment to academic research as well as assuming leadership positions in many student groups on campus.
