A select group of Project Dragonfly master's students have received more than $6,000 in Thomas K. Wilson-W. Hardy Eshbaugh and Jose I. Pareja-Wendy P. Tori Scholarships since 2011.

Project Dragonfly has awarded more than $4,600 in Thomas K. Wilson-W. Hardy Eshbaugh and Jose I. Pareja-Wendy P. Tori scholarships since 2011.

The nationally competitive Gilman scholarships are awarded twice a year. Now in its 13th year, the scholarship program is designed to help undergraduates with financial need study abroad. The program also aims to support students seeking unique opportunities in nontraditional countries, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and students with diverse ethnic backgrounds. "The Gilman selection panels are looking to award the scholarships to nontraditional students who are pursuing nontraditional programs," explains Karla Guinigundo, Miami's grant coordinator in the office of international education. Miami University's departments of mathematics and statistics held a joint awards banquet on April 2 to honor student achievements. The scholarships and awards given to students totaled $29,975 this year. Local students recognized are:

Seven Miami University students received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad. The students have been awarded a collective total of $29,000. The scholarship program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad by supporting U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding; the program also aims to diversify the countries and regions where students go to study.

Operating in over 155 countries, the Fulbright Program is the U.S. government's premiere scholarship program, and is awarded to students or scholars with strong academic background, leadership potential and a passion for increasing understanding among different cultures and nations. Approximately 1,600 U.S. students receive the award each year.
