Miami University Student Kenna Koehler Published in Pulse

2016 Dec 13

Pulse is a weekly publication that, as described in the most recent posting, tells the "true story of health care in personal terms- through the eyes and hearts of those who receive or give that care . . ."

Pulse was launched eight years ago and now has more than 10,000 subscribers. Pulse has one section called "More Voices" that has a different theme each month. The December, 2016 theme was Hope.

We invited our Opening Minds through Art (OMA) student leaders to submit a reflection on an experience of Hope and OMA to Pulse. For those unfamiliar with the OMA program, Scripps Opening Minds through Art (OMA) is an intergenerational visual arts program for people with dementia. The program's mission is "Building bridges across age and cognitive barriers through art".

Two of our student leaders, Kenna Koehler and Brianne Safer, had their submissions accepted and published in the "More Voices" section. Their reflections illustrate the bridges and meaningful relationships built between these students and the participating elders and, further, that elders with dementia can make a profound contribution to the personal and professional lives of students. The submissions can be found at the following: http://pulsevoices.org/index.php/pulse-more-voices/hope/931-hope-heals http://pulsevoices.org/index.php/pulse-more-voices/hope/929-leaving-a-little-sparkle-everywhere-i-go
